Effect of (Ti, Nb)(C, N) solid-solution powder on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti(C, N)-based cermets: key experiment aided by thermodynamic calculations

Abstract The preparation of Ti(C, N)-based cermets using (Ti, Me )(C, N) solid-solution powder instead the traditional + C mixtures has gradually become a popular research subject. By Nb)(C, and NbC powder, microstructures mechanical properties were investigated in present work with guidance thermodynamic calculations. calculations indicated that was thermodynamically less stable than N), which led to difference prepared NbC. cermet had no/weak core–rim structure. Moreover, surface binder-rich phases by solid solution thinner under vacuum sintering, beneficial for improving quality cermets. hardness values greater those NbC, fracture toughness underwent no noticeable change.
